The world’s seas and oceans are home to numerous life forms. These life forms swim, float, jump or crawl in the world oceans freely. Humans however continue to put the lives of the sea creatures at risk in one way or the other. Join Wiley and his Mummy as they tell you about one of the man-made hazards that leaves the sea creatures gasping for breath and a possible way to let the creatures live freely.

My Review

They start playing the 'I Spy' game wherein they say simple and short riddles about the sea animals around them. They see starfish, octopus, turtle, crab and a mysterious thing that looks like a jelly fish. What is the thing? Why is it considered a trap? How can we prevent it? The book Polytrap gives us the answers.

Review of Soul Ring sling

Product reviews has never been my forte. All I could assess were books. Nevertheless, there has been products which forced me to write a few words about. Soul baby sling is one such product. The product was gifted to me by my Sister-in-law while I was pregnant with my third baby. I was a bit apprehensive, taking into account, the experience with other baby carriers, which were heavy and uncomfortable.

The softness of the material is the highlight of the product. My baby was a whiny little thing and was impossible to take him out since he kept on crying. Fed up of the whole scenario, I tried several methods and finally ended up experimenting with the ring sling. It took me 2-3 days to learn the technique,  all the more so because I became a dumbhead post delivery. Once I got the knack of it, I cannot step out of my house without the ring sling baby carrier.

Photo courtesy:
The product is designed in such a way that baby snuggles to you and feels secured under our warmth. Once I wrapped him in the product, he just dozed off. We can try several positions with this product.

There are different variations of the product. Mine was Prism love-handwoven wrap conversion ring sling. The fabric is not the quintessential baby soft thing but it's not harsh on the baby skin as well.

I have tried out other baby carriers with my first two kids but somehow nothing worked for me but this time I hit the jackpot. While other baby carriers have weight limit for the babies, soul can be used to carry even your toddlers.

There was no moving in this moment. Her body afforded her no such luxury, as swirling white mist covered the soft green grass, giving the world an ethereal appearance. Crimson danced against the golden sky as the evening moved in quickly, hoping to make way for its dark lover.
Sam gazed around her, trying to make sense of the familiarity she felt with her setting, but she failed to hold onto the fleeting memory. The soft crunch of grass moving changed everything as realization dawned—she was no longer alone.
Her dark sapphire eyes narrowed, brow creasing as a figure cut through the dense, chalky air. He towered over her by a head or two, and judging by the large expanse of his shoulders, he often left the gym stained in his scent. As his shape continued to gain clarity, from color and size to the defined lines of a life well lived, the swell of anticipation grew within her at the story his facial features might tell.
As he drew close enough for focus, her jaw slackened and her eyes widened with wonder. He was for all intents and purposes a teenager, and yet by his exotic appearance, she guessed him to be a foreigner. Wherever he was from, he was simply beautiful.
He stopped just before her, his gaze locked on hers, and try though she may words escaped her cry for assistance. His piercing jade eyes bore into her, dark orange rays stretching lazily from the iris, his skin seeming to glitter as if kissed by the sun.
“I’ve been waiting for you.”
“For me?” Sam blinked in surprise, taking a hesitant step back.
“Ah, Samantha,” he breathed out, his brow creasing ever so slightly. “Same questions every time, my love. Shall I give you the same answers?”
“W-what a-answers?” She shook her head, attempting to draw in a breath that wasn’t filled with the smell of pure male.
There would be no relaxing in front of him for something was so very familiar and yet alarming to all of her protective senses. Brick by brick, her heart constructed a thick wall that would promise protection. He took a step forward and reached for her hand, but was a bit too late to infiltrate her senses as the wall was up and impenetrable.
She exhaled softly as their skin connected and instinctively let her fingers wrap around his as a sign of friendship. The warmth of his touch sent tingles racing along the corridors of her body and yet still the cold loneliness remained because she demanded it so. No one would ever penetrate her defenses again. Self-preservation had become her lifelong companion simply because life required such company.

What is to be done about the global economic crisis? What about the political instability in so many countries today? These and other critical problems are just not going to go away, so we need to find solutions. But how? And where? Some might say we need a Savior. In The World United Joseph Cazara is that person. He manages to eradicate terrorism and then actually brings peace to the Middle East. A new world government follows, called - The United Society of Earth, or USE. But there is opposition from the last remaining hold-outs. And the tenuous treaty between the Arab people and the Jews may not last as long as anticipated. The future is not yet written, but this novel gives us window into what the world will be like in the years ahead of us.

My Review

The world United is a futuristic book. Generally books showing the future are categorized as fantasy /sci fi. But here the book cannot be considered mere fantasy since it shows the impending plight of people all over the world. The story is depicted through the outlook of Dalee, assistant to the Secretary of State, United States, who later changes his profession. The story happens in 2049 when a 30 year old Dalee becomes a part of the formation of United Society of Earth. The repercussions of the same in the geo political scenario is the core of the story. To fight terrorism, Joseph Cazara comes out as the saviour of mother earth. Is he the real saviour or something else?

The narration is exemplary. There is an element of fantasy showing the supernatural powers. Dalee foray into music and movies were unwanted distraction to the whole storyline. The pace of the story is not steady. The interest that the readers feel keeps on fluctuating. A little more grip was needed in the narration. A commendable attempt was done to counter terrorism.

Motherhood is supposedly akin to sainthood—a blissful, happy mother looking adoringly at her smiley, chirpy baby. And not a cocktail in sight. But the Flaky Mummy pulls the truth out from under the carpet—in a world full of dirty diapers, the only salvation is a chilled cocktail!
This book is about the journey of six mothers with their quirky parenting styles:
A Punjabi mother stuck in the perils of a joint family while trying to bring her child up;
A tiger mother clawing her child’s path to the top;
A fad-loving disaster of a mother hopping from one ‘parenting method’ to the other;
A lost NRI who makes her way back to her ‘roots’;
A modern socialite with her new must-have accessory of the season—a baby;
A menopausal woman hitting ‘jackpot’ with her last egg.
Filled with hilarious tips and interesting observations, the Flaky Mummy is a witty satire on motherhood, which raises a toast to all the mothers out there struggling, surviving and succeeding at everything life throws their way--with a bit of assistance from their favourite tipple.

My Review

'Completion of womanhood is motherhood' this has been a saying going on for centuries. Madhuri Banerjee and Rohini Tiwari through their book flaky mummy shows that motherhood makes a woman nothing but incomplete. Well I didn't mean it to come out that way. The insinuation was that the book shows how a woman's life changes drastically after her delivery.

The book contains the anecdotes of six women wherein they handled their pre and post natal period. The first one is that of a Punjabi mother. Her dilemma in bringing up her child in a joint family where her mother-in-law is the ultimate decision maker. Right from selecting the name of the baby to the decision of whether to use diaper or cloth nappy is taken by the MIL. The narration is very humorous and engaging.

Second one is a strict mother who tried to make her average  child extraordinary by enrolling him to every Tom. Dick and Harry's classes. This one seemed a fictional adaptation rather than  true story. Yes there are mothers of the similat make but he narration was under a typical fictional frame.Third one is the experience of a mother who tried to experiment attachment parenting.  While most of the methods sounded good for the baby, some extreme methods like mastication feeding were impractical.

Next story is of a socialite mother who decided to have a baby just to be in the page 3 pages as a sexy mother is a frank one. Her give and take with the baby sitter is sure to tickle the funny bone of the readers. Fifth story is that of an expatriate who is lured by the possibility of getting a full time help. Once back in India, she finds it difficult to adjust to the discrepancy in child rearing practices.
Sixth one is my favourite. A forty four year old gets an unexpected gift. The prejudices of the society is laid bare in the story.

All the stories end with a recipe of cocktail each mother would live to have. End of the book there is a list of cocktails as well. All the stories somewhere or other portrays that every mother needs her space in life termed as the 'me' time. An anecdote on a mother who doesn't think of anything other than children should have been added.

Interview with Lauren

Do you have a favorite spot where you like to write?
I have quite a few spots. My husband built a studio for me, but I like to write in a chair in the corner of the living room or in the sitting room in our master bedroom or even in bed in the evening.

What is your writer food?
Hershey Kisses. Not any of the new fancy flavors. I like the reliable milk chocolate. If I’m wrapped up in a scene and on a good roll with a book, I can eat the whole bag of Hershey kisses and not even realize it until they are gone and those little foil wrappers are all around my laptop and on the floor at my feet.

What inspires you to write?
Anything. People—even complete strangers. Circumstances. News headlines. Real murder cases. Anything, anywhere, anyone, anytime can inspire me.

What inspired you to write Killer in the Band?
For each mystery, both the Lovers in Crime and Mac Faraday Mysteries, I chose the setting after coming up with the murder plot. I tailored the characters to fit with the mystery. Lovers in Crime is a small town setting. I grew up in Chester, West Virginia, and there are quite a few farms in and around the Ohio Valley.
I introduced readers to Joshua Thornton in my first book, A Small Case of Murder. Readers of that book may remember that Joshua’s mother grew up on a dairy farm and that on his mother’s side, Joshua comes from a long line of farmers. Therefore, it was destined that eventually, a Lovers in Crime Mystery had to be set on a farm.

What are some of your favorite books?
Oh, there are so many. I have to say that I feel a certain attachment to Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. When I first read that book, as a young teenager, I really did not see the twist at the end coming. I think that was when I aspired to become a skilled enough writer to leave readers breathless with clever twists and turns in my mysteries.

What authors do you like to read?
I like Tess Gerritsen right now. She knows how to keep me on the edge of my seat.

This or that.
Sweet or Salty? Sweet, of course!
Naughty or nice? Both
Cats or dogs? Dogs. My son is allergic to cats. I love anything that is furry and huggable.
Vanilla or chocolate? Chocolate. I LOVE chocolate!

If you were deserted on an island, which author would you want to be stranded with?

Mark Twain. I loved the way his mind worked in his books, plus he has a good sense of humor. I would want to laugh if I was on a desert island. Being a down-home country girl myself, I would like to think he would understand me and I wouldn’t get on his nerves too badly.

Believing that life always gives us all a second chance is too bookish a thought. Because sometimes, by the time we finally realize our faults and true potential, times have changed dramatically.
Like a couple of migratory birds, both Charlie and Edwin leave everything back in their village and settle for a new life in the big city. For Edwin, it was where he was going to chase his dreams of becoming an actor; But for Charlie, it was just another place to be with his only friend, to help him accomplish his dreams.
However, life seemed to have different plans as it throws Charlie in Aster's way, who was silently walking through instabilities of her own destiny. He could never have guessed, but he was in for an absolute unthoughtful phase of profoundness, which was going to last forever.
Promise me a Million Times is a story of dreams, friendship, struggles and a will to make up for every loss with love by your side.

My Review

Going through the lives of Charles and Edwin, story of dreams and struggle, takes the readers to a world of love and friendship .
The narration is simple first person narration of Charles. Charles and Edwin sets out from Lugaar and reaches Etiole to achieve something in life. Edwin wants to become  an actor wherein Charles is aimless till he meets Aster. Aster teaches him how to cope with difficulties. She motivates him to recuperate from the failures and start dreaming again. The places Etiole and Lugar are fictional
The characters Charels and Aster are well crafted. But, the rest of the characters did not appeal a second look.
 The relationship between Aster and Charles is platonic. Thankfully author did not succumb to the new trend of clubbing erotica and love. The story is slow paced but short. Somewhere I felt an amateurish touch in the way the storyline was developing.
Lack of novelty is the major issue I felt with the book. The story of a small town guy who dream big,  and fall In love with city girl is an over worked formula. The book has a niche target audience i.e early teens. May be that is the reason why author adopted the simple style of writing. In between an easy breezy read, undue squeezing in of lengthy sturdy words like obstreperously, pulchritude etc stuck out like a sore thump. The narration could have been tight and strong. The climax is a cliche. Again an overworked formula.
The book needed a through rework to appeal to the masses.

He is the Mahatma, a man the world venerates as a prophet of peace. But for Kastur, the child bride who married the boy next door, Mohandas was a sexually-driven, self-righteous, and overbearing husband.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was sworn to poverty, celibacy and the cause for India’s freedom; Kastur spent sixty-two years of her life, juggling the roles of a devoted wife, a satyagrahi and sacrificing mother, who was eclipsed because of a man who almost became God for India’s multitude. Gandhi was an intolerant father to Harilal, his wayward son, driven to debauchery; Kasturba paid the price for her son’s unending misery.

Kastur is long dead, but she lives on in the pages of her diary…. Renowned author Neelima Dalmia Adhar lays it bare to tell the world what it meant to be Kasturba Gandhi, wife of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi - in a gripping tale of unconditional love, passion, sex, ecstasy and the ultimate liberation that every woman seeks.

My Review

The secret diary of Kasturba is a tribute to one of the strongest, supportive and sacrificing females in the history of India.Eclipsed under the shadow of her great husband, very few have thought of the turmoil she had to handle. Kasturba's inner feelings are depicted in detail in this book. Nevertheless, major part of the book is like biography of Gandhiji narrated by his wife. Every coin has two sides, likewise every human being has two faces. The book shows another face of Mahatma Gandhi. He himself has admitted that he was not a good husband and a father for that matter.

On the flipside, we can see an abusive, suspicious,apathetic human being. The plight of his sons, especially elder one Harilal is explained in detail. Every instances are connected flawlessly. A lot of research has been invested. How Harilal felt left out or discriminated under the shades of principles seems to be the major theme of the book.

The book is like Sita's Ramayana. Author shows the world that Kasturba is not just Mrs Gandhi but a headstrong woman in flesh and blood,whose life and dreams were neglected by her better half, who dedicated his life for a greater cause. Author has thrown light to the life of a woman who was forgotten in the pages of history.

Somewhere down the line, there seems to be a feminist tinge in the whole narration. If not feminism, I would like to call it the product of female chauvinism. Being a woman myself, it was difficult for me to digest the unilateral account of the events. There is a thin line between telling the truth and defaming someone. In some instances the word self-righteous sounded like an invective. The books is a fiction but which is the fictional element ? This is something that is not mentioned anywhere.  An author's note was needed give clarity on that front.

Overall the book should be read by every Indian to understand this great woman's  contribution to our struggle for Independence but with discretion.

 I received this book as a complimentary copy in exchange for a honest review. I waas not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

About the author

When Neelima Dalmia Adhar wrote Father Dearest: The Life and Times of R.K. Dalmia in 2003, she was on the bestseller list and labelled a daredevil “family chronicler” who had exposed some fiercely-guarded secrets. She then wrote a novel, Merchants of Death in 2007 to be established as a mistress of the genre.

Educated in a convent school and a reputed college in Delhi, she has a Master’s in Psychology with a specialization in “Personality”. Her first and only job was to teach Psychology to undergraduate students of Delhi University.

A passionate “people-watcher”, she is drawn to oddities and thrives on writing about personalities and human behaviour, from the quirky to the mysterious to the bizarre, a subject she does chillingly close to the bone.

She lives in Delhi with her husband, children and two grandchildren.
